QR ordering without an app: how the technology actually works
When ordering by QR code, the guest’s phone opens an ordinary web page in the browser — nothing is installed and no account is created. The QR code carries the information about which table the guest is sitting at, so the order arrives in the right place without any further input. All that is needed is a smartphone with a camera and an internet connection.
The most common worry before rolling this out: “My guests are not going to download an app.” That worry is justified, and it is exactly why modern QR ordering works without one. What happens technically is simpler than it sounds.
What happens when scanning
- The guest points the phone camera at the QR code on the table. Every current camera app recognises QR codes by itself; a separate scanner app has not been necessary for years.
- The phone opens a web address in the browser. The address already contains which business and which table is meant, so the guest has nothing to enter.
- The menu loads as a web page: with images, categories, allergen notes and current prices.
- The guest adds items to the basket and sends the order. It appears with the staff immediately — on a screen, in the staff app or on the receipt printer.
Why no app is needed
A menu with an ordering function needs nothing a browser cannot do: show content, accept input, send an order. App stores, downloads and updates would only be hurdles for guests, and every hurdle costs orders. For the business it also means no app store approvals and no versions going stale on guests’ phones.
| Web ordering (QR) | Native app | |
|---|---|---|
| Installation for the guest | none | download + account |
| Current menu | immediately, maintained centrally | only reliable after an app update |
| Hurdle before the first order | one scan | open store, download, register |
| Works on | any smartphone with a browser | supported systems only |
The honest limits
- Nothing works without internet: the guest needs mobile data or Wi-Fi. In basements or buildings with poor reception, guest Wi-Fi is part of the rollout.
- Guests without a smartphone keep ordering from staff. QR ordering adds to the service, it does not replace it.
- The screen stays a phone screen: a menu with 200 items and no categories is confusing digitally too.
Do guests need an app to order by QR code?
No. The QR code opens the menu as an ordinary web page in the phone browser. Nothing is installed, no account is created and no payment details are stored.
How does the system know which table the guest is at?
Every table gets its own QR code. The table information is part of the web address the code opens, so the guest selects or types nothing, and the order reaches the staff with the correct table number.
Does QR ordering work on every phone?
On every smartphone with a camera and a browser, iPhone as well as Android, regardless of the age of the device as long as it runs a current browser. An internet connection over mobile data or Wi-Fi is required.
