Receipt printer without a POS: how QR orders reach the kitchen
QR orders can be printed on a receipt printer in the kitchen or at the counter without any POS system: a cloud-capable thermal printer fetches new orders over the internet by itself — no computer next to it and no till connection required. What is needed is a printer with CloudPRNT support (the Star TSP143IV, for instance) and a stable internet connection on site. The ticket replaces the kitchen slip, not the bill.
Many kitchens prefer paper: a ticket on the rail can be taken in at a glance, survives grease and heat and needs no screen. The good news is that no till has to be connected for this — modern receipt printers talk to the internet themselves.
How cloud printing works
- The printer stands in the kitchen or at the counter and connects to the business internet by cable or Wi-Fi.
- At short intervals it asks the ordering system by itself: “is there a new job for me?” That is what CloudPRNT means.
- When a QR order comes in, it is ready at the next request and gets printed: table, items, notes, time.
- Because the printer asks on its own, no port forwarding, no fixed IP address and no computer on site are needed.
What it takes, and what it does not
| needed? | |
|---|---|
| Cloud-capable receipt printer (e.g. Star TSP143IV with CloudPRNT) | yes |
| Internet in the kitchen or at the counter (cable or stable Wi-Fi) | yes |
| POS system or till connection | no |
| A computer or tablet next to the printer | no |
| Thermal paper rolls | yes — standard stock, no special paper |
The honest limits
- If the internet on site fails, nothing prints. Orders are not lost — they wait and still appear in the staff app — but the kitchen only notices when somebody looks. A plan for telling the team belongs to the setup.
- The kitchen ticket is neither a bill nor a fiscal receipt: cash register obligations concern the business till, not the kitchen slip of the ordering system.
- One printer serves one output point. To print kitchen and bar separately, set up two printers and assign the categories accordingly.
Which receipt printer works with MenuMonkeys?
Cloud-capable Star printers with CloudPRNT; the Star TSP143IV has proven itself in practice. It connects directly to the ordering system — without a till connection, without an extra computer and without port forwarding in the router.
Do I need a POS system for receipt printing?
No. The printer fetches the orders over the internet itself and prints the kitchen ticket on its own. Billing happens at the existing till as before — the two systems do not have to be connected for that.
What happens to orders when the printer is offline?
They are not lost: every order stays in the system and is visible in the staff app. The business is also notified when a printer stops fetching, so that a paper jam is noticed before the guests notice it.
